The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has launched a new Instant Fines Traffic Management System designed to modernise traffic law enforcement across Kenya through automated monitoring and digital notifications.
Under the new system, motorists who commit traffic violations will receive instant SMS alerts on their mobile phones, informing them of the offence and the corresponding fine.
Automated detection of traffic offences
According to the transport regulator, the system automatically detects traffic violations and sends notifications directly to vehicle owners or drivers without human intervention.
The initiative aims to improve transparency, efficiency, and accountability in traffic enforcement while reducing manual processes and potential disputes between motorists and officers.
Seven-day deadline for payments
Motorists who receive a traffic violation notice will be required to pay the fine within seven days. Payments can be made through any branch of KCB Group.
Authorities warned that failure to settle fines within the specified period will attract additional penalties, including interest charges on unpaid amounts.
Drivers with outstanding fines may also be blocked from accessing services on NTSA digital platforms until the penalties are cleared.
Reducing roadside confrontations
The regulator said the digital system is expected to reduce roadside confrontations between motorists and traffic officers, while creating a centralised digital record of traffic offences nationwide.
Officials have urged road users to comply with traffic regulations and respond promptly to official notifications as the country moves toward technology-driven road safety enforcement.
