The Democratic Republic of the Congo has launched a new digital portal aimed at overhauling its higher education and research ecosystem, marking a major step in the country’s push toward digital transformation.
The platform, introduced under the Higher Education, University, Scientific Research and Innovation (ESURSI) sub-sector, is designed to centralise academic data and improve system-wide efficiency.
Tackling Long-Standing Challenges
The initiative, led by Higher Education Minister Marie-Thérèse Sombo, seeks to address persistent structural issues in the sector, including fragmented data systems, limited access to academic resources, and disparities between urban and rural institutions.
Officials noted that weak digital infrastructure, uneven broadband access, and limited adoption of modern technology have long hindered the effectiveness of education and research administration.
A Push for Digital Transformation
The launch aligns with the broader reform agenda of Prime Minister Judith Suminwa, which prioritises digital innovation across public services.
Authorities say the portal will serve as a strategic tool to strengthen governance, enable data-driven decision-making, and improve policy implementation within the education sector.
What the Platform Offers
At its core, the new system will function as a secure, centralised hub for real-time academic data management. Key features include:
- Improved tracking of students’ academic records and pathways
- Expanded access to research and learning materials
- Enhanced transparency and coordination across institutions
- Stronger, data-backed governance of the education system
Building a Modern Academic Ecosystem
Government officials described the portal as a foundational step toward creating a more integrated, transparent, and technologically advanced higher education system.
By digitising processes and improving access to knowledge, the initiative is expected to bridge gaps in the sector and position DR Congo’s academic and research institutions for greater global competitiveness.
