A Kaspersky cybersecurity report has revealed that 41% of users in Africa were affected by on-device malware threats in 2025, the highest rate recorded across the globe. The findings highlight the growing cyber threat landscape on the continent, outpacing other regions.
Globally, 33% of users experienced on-device malware attacks. Other regions recorded the following rates:
- Asia-Pacific (APAC): 33%
- Middle East: 32%
- Latin America: 30%
- Europe: 20%
What Are On-Device Malware Threats?
On-device malware spreads through removable media like USB drives, CDs, and DVDs, and can also infiltrate systems through encrypted files or complex software installers. Attackers use these methods to access sensitive user information and compromise organisational networks.
In addition, web-based malware affected 27% of users worldwide in 2025. In Africa, 21% of users faced web threats, compared to 26% in Latin America, 21% in Europe, and 19% in the Middle East.
The report also notes the resurgence of the Hacking Team, which now deploys its commercial spyware, Dante, in the ForumTroll APT campaign, exploiting zero-day vulnerabilities in Chrome and Firefox.
Malware Trends Surge in 2025
According to Alexander Liskin, Head of Threat Research at Kaspersky, attackers exploit software vulnerabilities and stolen credentials, making robust cybersecurity essential to avoid prolonged disruptions.
Key statistics from the report include:
- 500,000 malicious files detected daily, a 7% increase from 2024
- Password stealer detections: +59% YoY
- Spyware detections: +51% YoY
- Backdoor detections: +6% YoY
Windows remains the most targeted platform, with 48% of users attacked, while 29% of Mac users experienced malware incidents.
Cybersecurity Recommendations for Protection
For Individuals:
- Avoid downloading apps from untrusted sources
- Do not click suspicious links or ads
- Enable two-factor authentication (2FA)
- Use strong, unique passwords and password managers
- Keep systems and software up to date
- Never disable antivirus or security software
For Organisations:
- Back up corporate data regularly and store it offline
- Apply software updates on all devices
- Restrict remote desktop access and use strong passwords
- Conduct regular cybersecurity training for staff
With malware attacks on the rise, implementing these cybersecurity measures is crucial to protect personal data, finances, and organisational systems.
