On 7 September 2025, Ngabwe District in Zambia’s Central Province reached a major milestone with the commissioning of a new telecommunication tower in Chief Munkumbwe’s Chiefdom, Lufubu Constituency.
The project, officially launched by the Minister of Technology and Science, Hon. Felix Chipota Mutati MP, is designed to strengthen digital connectivity, boost healthcare services, and create new economic opportunities for the people of Ngabwe.
Expanding Network Coverage for Rural Communities
The newly commissioned tower will extend network coverage to 999 households, directly benefiting an estimated 5,500 residents.
It forms part of the government’s broader initiative to roll out 163 towers nationwide, aimed at bridging the digital divide and advancing Zambia’s digital transformation agenda.
Minister Mutati emphasized that the tower will enable:
- Mobile money transactions for financial inclusion.
- Access to e-learning platforms for students.
- Fertilizer and agricultural purchases for farmers.
- Improved healthcare communication, including consultations and theatre operations.
He further announced that three additional towers will soon be built in Ngabwe to expand coverage and support the district’s rapid development.
Stakeholder Support and Local Benefits
Key stakeholders, including Zamtel, ZICTA, Lusaka Telecom Solutions, and the Ngabwe Council, highlighted the tower’s impact on education, research, rural businesses, and farming communities.
ZICTA confirmed that the project is part of Phase 3 of its national infrastructure programme, which includes:
- Construction of 51 new towers.
- Upgrading of existing sites from 2G to 4G.
Local leaders, the District Commissioner, Council Chairperson, and Member of Parliament, welcomed the development, urging residents to safeguard the infrastructure and support government initiatives.

The project also underscores youth empowerment, with Lusaka Telecom Solutions involving young subcontractors and graduates in the construction process. This approach not only improves infrastructure but also enhances skills development and employment opportunities for Zambian youth.

Healthcare professionals praised the development, with Dr. K. Mwila, Hospital In-Charge, calling the tower a life-saving tool. He highlighted its role in improving consultations, patient referrals, and collaboration among medical staff, ultimately raising the quality of care in the district.
