Marks & Spencer (M&S) has confirmed the departure of its digital chief Rachel, just months after a damaging cyber attack that hit the retailer’s systems.
A company spokesperson said:
“Rachel has decided to take a break and is stepping back from her role, having been a valued part of the leadership team. She has been a steady hand and calm head at an extraordinary time for the business, and we wish her well for the future.”
The news of Rachel’s resignation was first reported by Sky News.
Hack Costs M&S £300 Million
In May, M&S revealed that the hacking incident would result in around £300 million ($405 million) in lost operating profit for its 2025/26 financial year.
However, the company expressed optimism that it could reduce the financial damage by up to half through insurance claims and strict cost controls.
Leadership Transition at M&S
To fill the leadership gap, Sacha Berendji, M&S’s operations director, will now oversee the digital and technology functions in addition to his existing responsibilities.
This transition highlights M&S’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its digital resilience while continuing to modernize its operations amid rising cybersecurity threats in the retail sector.
Final Thoughts
Rachel’s departure marks a significant leadership change for M&S at a time when the company is navigating both the financial and reputational fallout of a major cyber attack. With Sacha Berendji stepping into the role, M&S aims to stabilize its digital operations and restore investor and consumer confidence.
