Driving Digital Inclusion in Ghana The Girls-in-ICT Programme is a flagship national project promoting gender equity in digital skills training. By expanding access in underserved regions such as Savannah, the government is addressing barriers to women’s participation in technology and ensuring more equitable opportunities in the digital sector. Through this teacher-led model, Ghana is reinforcing its commitment to inclusive digital transformation, while creating pathways for girls to thrive in future tech careers.

The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation has launched a Training of Trainers (ToT) session in Damongo, Savannah Region, as part of the National Girls-in-ICT Programme. The initiative is designed to strengthen digital literacy and inspire more girls to pursue careers in technology.

The training, hosted at Damongo Senior High School, brings together 100 selected teachers who are being equipped with foundational programming skills using Scratch, a visual programming language developed to introduce learners to coding.

Building Capacity Through Teachers

During the training, teachers are learning how to develop interactive stories, animations, and games with Scratch. The aim is to empower them to transfer these skills to schoolgirls across the Savannah Region.

By prioritizing teacher capacity building, the programme seeks to create a sustainable knowledge-transfer model that ensures continuity and long-term impact. Each trained teacher will guide and mentor students, helping them gain practical exposure to coding and digital creativity.

Reaching 1,000 Girls in the Savannah Region

The Ministry estimates that the initiative will benefit 1,000 girls across the region. By introducing young learners to digital skills at an early stage, the programme fosters curiosity in STEM fields, builds confidence, and encourages girls to explore opportunities in information and communication technology.

This aligns with Ghana’s broader digital inclusion agenda, which aims to prepare the next generation for participation in the global digital economy.
