The Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS) has unveiled a new USSD solution designed to simplify tax compliance and streamline the registration of Tax Identification Numbers (TINs). The launch forms part of Edo State’s preparations for the nationwide enforcement of the new Nigerian Tax Acts scheduled to begin on January 1, 2026.
New USSD Service to Improve Access and Compliance
According to Courage Eboigbe, Head of Corporate Communications at EIRS, the new service is aimed at boosting inclusivity and making it easier for residents to meet their tax filing obligations. He noted that the platform will widen formal economic participation and strengthen the ease of doing business across the state.
The project is being delivered in partnership with the Joint Tax Board (JTB).
*Features of the 668# USSD Code
Residents can dial *668# on any mobile phone to instantly register for a Tax ID at a service cost of ₦20.
The USSD platform also enables users to:
- Verify their Tax ID
- Generate tax-related certificates
Despite being an Edo State initiative, checks indicate the code is accessible nationwide, allowing Nigerians in any state to use it.
FIRS Introduced a Similar Service in 2024
The new platform follows the Federal Inland Revenue Service’s rollout of the *829# USSD code last year. That service, which costs ₦100, enables taxpayers to:
- Retrieve their Tax ID
- Validate Tax Clearance Certificates (TCC)
- Access information on tax types and rates
- Make tax-related inquiries
- Find nearby FIRS offices
This innovation places Nigeria among only six African nations providing USSD tax services.
Edo Opens 14 Additional Tax ID Registration Centres
To further expand access, EIRS has established 14 new Tax ID registration centres across Edo State. These centres are located in major zonal tax offices including:
- Oredo
- Egor
- Ikpoba-Okha
- Uhunmwonde
- Ovia North-East
- Orhionmwon
- Ovia South-West
- Esan West
- Esan North-East
- Akoko-Edo
- Etsako East
- Etsako West
- Owan East
Supporting Compliance Ahead of the 2026 Tax Regime
Eboigbe described the rollout as a strategic step toward ensuring that taxpayers, particularly those in rural areas and members of the diaspora, can easily obtain their Tax ID before the new laws take effect.
In addition to using the USSD code or visiting physical centres, Nigerians can verify or register TINs through the JTB portal: tin.jtb.gov.ng.
