The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with Microsoft, has announced plans to roll out high-speed internet infrastructure across the country’s six regions. This was shared in a statement on Monday by presidential aide Tolu Ogunlesi.
According to the announcement, the initiative stems from discussions involving the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, Microsoft, and local partners. The project will leverage Microsoft’s Airband Initiative, which uses unused television white space frequencies to deliver affordable and fast internet access.
The Airband technology offers a quicker and more cost-effective alternative to traditional fibre optics, with the advantage of covering long distances and navigating challenging terrains like forests. The goal is to expand connectivity to underserved areas across Nigeria.
