The Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB) has announced that the state’s Smart Green Schools will officially commence full academic activities on September 22, 2025.
The announcement was made by Prof. Hyginus Okibe, Executive Chairman of ENSUBEB, during a management meeting held in Enugu.
Digital Education Drive in Enugu State
Prof. Okibe highlighted the importance of aligning with Governor Peter Mbah’s education reform agenda, which prioritizes digital learning, ICT skill development, and sustainability in classrooms. He urged staff to fully embrace the transformation, stressing that adaptability and ICT competence will be critical for teachers and administrators in the new Smart Green Schools.
Change your mindset to the positive side since it will no longer be business as usual,” Okibe said, adding that staff welfare and entitlements remain guaranteed as long as they remain hardworking and committed.
Monitoring and Supervision of Smart Green Schools
ENSUBEB also revealed plans for routine monitoring and supervision of Smart Schools across Enugu State to ensure strict implementation of government programmes and education policies.
Prof. Okibe praised staff for their contribution to Enugu’s outstanding performance in national basic education rankings while assuring them of continuous support and professional development.
What Makes Smart Green Schools Different?
Launched in 2024 by Governor Peter Mbah, the Smart Green School initiative was designed to transform basic education in Enugu State. The first pilot school was established at Owo in Nkanu East Local Government Area, serving as a model for all 260 wards in the state.
Unlike traditional schools, the Smart Green Schools are built around technology, innovation, and sustainability. They feature:
- Digital classrooms and ICT labs with robotics and coding resources
- Virtual learning platforms for interactive education
- Solar-powered facilities for clean energy
- Smart farms that combine agriculture with learning
- Teacher housing, libraries, and healthcare centers for inclusive development
Students in these schools benefit from:
- Free uniforms and meals
- Access to healthcare services
- Tablets and e-learning resources
- Hands-on training in robotics, coding, and agriculture
Global Partnerships and Expansion
The Owo Smart Green School has already attracted support from UNICEF, UNESCO, and the World Bank, earning global recognition for its success in robotics, digital education, and eco-friendly practices.
Following the pilot’s success, the Enugu State Government is scaling up the initiative, with new Smart Green Schools under construction. Plans are also underway to transition graduates into Smart Senior Secondary Schools and vocational training institutions
Conclusion
The official commencement of full academic activities on September 22, 2025 marks a major milestone in Enugu’s education revolution. By combining digital learning, sustainability, and inclusivity, the Smart Green Schools are set to redefine basic education and position Enugu as a pioneer in smart education in Nigeria and Africa.
