The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations has launched a Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop under the National Girls-in-ICT Programme, aimed at boosting digital literacy and coding skills for young girls in the Upper West Region.

The week-long training, taking place from September 18 to 22, 2025, at the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS) in Wa, brings together 100 teachers from all 11 districts of the region. Participants will undergo intensive sessions in ICT, digital skills, computer literacy, coding, and emerging technologies.

Empowering Girls Through Digital Skills

Upon completion, the trained teachers will mentor 1,000 girls from Primary Four to Junior High School, transferring ICT knowledge to bridge Ghana’s digital gender divide. The initiative is designed to inspire the next generation of female innovators and increase opportunities for young women in technology.

Upper West Regional Minister, Hon. Charles Lwanga Puozuing Esq., commended the Ministry’s efforts during the opening ceremony. He urged teachers to embrace their roles as mentors and role models, shaping the region’s contribution to Ghana’s digital future.

Nationwide Impact of Girls-in-ICT Programme

According to Mr. Austin Hesse, Director of Policy, Planning, Budgeting, Monitoring and Evaluation at the Ministry, the programme has already trained over 15,981 girls and 1,292 teachers nationwide in ICT, coding, and machine learning.

He highlighted the transformative impact of the initiative, noting that it aligns with Ghana’s vision of building a more inclusive digital economy.

Competitions, Mentorship, and Awards

The Upper West programme will conclude with:

  • Coding competitions
  • Mentorship sessions with industry experts
  • Awards ceremony where the best-performing 100 girls will receive certificates and laptops

This rollout follows a similar Training of Trainers workshop in the Volta Region, with the Savannah Region scheduled as the next host.

Driving Digital Inclusion in Ghana

The Girls-in-ICT initiative remains one of Ghana’s flagship programmes to promote STEM education for girls, narrow the digital gender gap, and build a pipeline of future-ready female leaders in the tech sector.

With sustained government support, the initiative is expected to scale further across the country, ensuring that young Ghanaian girls are not left behind in the global digital revolution.
