Gemini, Google’s powerful AI assistant, continues to evolve inside Google Docs. Introduced in June last year through a dedicated side panel, Gemini revolutionized how users create, refine, and manage documents. Now, Google is taking it a step further, adding source-grounded writing that makes AI-generated assistance more accurate and contextual.

The update was announced in a new Google Workspace blog post, confirming that users can now tell Gemini to pull information only from specific sources. This ensures that the content suggestions and writing help you receive are directly aligned with your chosen materials.

How the New Source-Grounded Writing Feature Works

Previously, users who wanted Gemini to use specific files or references had to manually paste or upload those sources via the prompt field. With this new update, that process becomes seamless.

When you open Gemini’s side panel in Google Docs, it will automatically curate a list of sources from your current document. You can then choose a particular file or link as the primary source for Gemini’s writing and research assistance.

This means Gemini can now:

  • Generate or refine content using only the selected source
  • Summarize and reference the linked material accurately
  • Provide contextual and reliable responses without leaving Docs

According to Google, this feature will help users query available knowledge on a topic while ensuring accuracy and eliminating the need for “guesswork or tab switching.”

More Context, Less Effort

The source-grounded writing feature is designed to save users time and improve output reliability. By grounding responses in specific documents, Gemini’s suggestions become more relevant and factual, especially for users working on research papers, reports, or collaborative documents.

Google says the change makes it easier to “get accurate answers tailored to your needs,” as the AI tool will rely solely on verified sources linked within the document.

For documents without any linked files, users can still add files or sources individually via the prompt, preserving flexibility and control.

Availability: Already Rolling Out to Workspace Users

There’s no manual toggle or setup required for this feature. Google confirmed that it has already rolled out globally to all Google Workspace users, including those subscribed to Google One AI Premium.

This means users across organizations and personal accounts can now take advantage of grounded writing assistance, ensuring Gemini produces responses that are accurate, efficient, and source-based.

Why This Matters for Gemini and Google Workspace

This update strengthens Gemini’s position as a productivity-driven AI assistant, moving beyond general writing help to research-backed, source-informed generation. For professionals, academics, and content creators, it bridges the gap between creative AI and factually reliable assistance, all within the familiar Google Docs environment.

By integrating this capability directly into Docs, Google is reinforcing its commitment to trustworthy AI and making Gemini a more indispensable tool for Workspace users.
