Google has unveiled its 2025 Year in Search, revealing the keywords and conversations that captured the attention of Nigerians throughout the year. Among the most searched topics were “iPhone 17,” “Straw Movie,” and Senator Natasha Akpoti, reflecting the country’s deep interest in technology, entertainment, and political events.

The annual Google report provides a snapshot of the top trending searches globally and nationally, showcasing what people wanted to know, learn, and explore across categories such as news, personalities, entertainment, music, and lifestyle trends.

AI-Powered Search Boosts Curiosity and Conversational Queries

Simon Rogers, Data Editor for Google Trends, noted that the widespread integration of AI into Google Search transformed user behaviour in 2025. Searches became more conversational and exploratory.

According to him: “People want to understand more about the world around them. Searches for ‘Tell me about…’ are up 70% year over year, and queries starting with ‘How do I…’ hit an all-time high with a 25% increase.”

He added that even niche queries such as “How do I know if my Labubu is real?” topped specific search categories, signaling users’ growing interest in authenticity and product verification.

Top Trending Searches in Nigeria (2025)

1. Leading News Searches

Nigerians searched widely on sports, political figures, and global events. The top news-related searches of 2025 include:

  1. Club World Cup
  2. Diogo Jota
  3. Buhari
  4. Charlie Kirk
  5. iPhone 17

Football once again proved to be a unifying national passion.

2. Most Searched Personalities

Senator Natasha Hadiza Akpoti emerged as the most searched public figure in Nigeria for 2025. Her prominence followed allegations that Senate President Godswill Akpabio sexually harassed her, a story that dominated online discussions for weeks.

Other prominent personalities in the top search list include:

  • Eberechi Eze – Arsenal footballer
  • Siminalayi Fubara – Governor of Rivers State
  • Chika Ike – Nollywood actress
  • Mr Eazi – Musician and tech entrepreneur

3. Top Movies Searched by Nigerians

Nigerians showed strong interest in both international and local movies. The top movie searches were:

  1. Straw
  2. Sinners
  3. Love In Every World
  4. To Kill a Monkey
  5. G20 Movie

4. Most Popular TV Series

TV shows also dominated screens nationwide, with these titles generating the highest search traffic:

Nigerians leaned toward uplifting and soulful music in 2025. The most searched songs include:

  1. Oluwatosin (Jesus Is Enough) – Tkeyz Ft. Stevehills
  2. Joy Is Coming – Fido
  3. With You – Davido Ft. Omah Lay
  4. Shallipopi – Laho
  5. My Darling – Chella

6. Trending “Meaning” and “What Is” Searches

Searches showed Nigerians’ growing curiosity about language, culture, and global figures:

  • Meaning of Allegedly
  • What is Labubu?
  • Who is Charlie Kirk?
  • Who is Tompolo?

Culinary curiosity remained high, with the Pornstar Martini recipe leading food and drink-related searches for the second straight year.

Tech searches surged, with Nigerians showing particular interest in new smartphone releases:
