The Lagos State Government, in collaboration with MTN Nigeria, has announced plans to redevelop the Obalende under-bridge into a modern transport facility known as the Y’ELLO Bus Park.
The initiative was confirmed on Tuesday by Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, who said the project aims to turn the long-neglected site into a secure, organised, and community-oriented transport hub.
From Neglect to Modern Transport Hub
Wahab explained that the redevelopment will overhaul what was previously a degraded and disorderly space, converting it into a well-planned transport interchange designed to improve commuter safety, urban order, and environmental standards.
“The project will transform a once-degraded and unsafe environment into a functional, secure, and community-focused public facility,” the Commissioner said in a post on X.
The redevelopment aligns with the state government’s broader urban clean-up and public space recovery strategy, which targets improved security, better infrastructure, and a cleaner city environment.
Design Focused on Safety and Sustainability
According to Wahab, the Y’ELLO Bus Park will be developed with a strong focus on safety, hygiene, and visual appeal.
Core features include:
- Solar-powered street lighting to improve night-time visibility and eliminate blind spots
- CCTV surveillance systems to monitor activities, deter crime, and enhance security around Obalende
He added that the surveillance infrastructure will also rely on solar energy, ensuring continuous operation and improved protection of lives and property.
Renewable Energy and Climate Considerations
As part of Lagos State’s climate action goals, the project will integrate renewable energy solutions, including solar panels, to reduce operational costs and minimise the facility’s environmental footprint.
“This project reflects our commitment to climate responsibility through the use of solar energy for long-term efficiency and reduced carbon emissions,” Wahab said.
Transport Services and Public Facilities
Beyond its transport function, the Y’ELLO Bus Park will include:
- A regulated bus terminal to organise traffic flow and commuter movement
- A recycling collection point to curb indiscriminate waste disposal
- A road camp for LAWMA operatives and security personnel
The facility will also provide more than 60 public toilet units, alongside kiosks and other essential services for commuters and nearby residents.
Green and Waste Management Infrastructure
Additional environmentally focused installations will include:
- A biodigester system to treat wastewater generated within the park
- Tree planting initiatives aimed at improving air quality and enhancing the surrounding landscape
Restoring Order to Public Spaces
Wahab noted that the project underscores the Lagos State Government’s commitment to reclaiming public areas from criminal and illegal activities, while delivering infrastructure that meets the daily needs of residents.
Once completed, the Y’ELLO Bus Park is expected to enhance urban mobility, public safety, and environmental quality in the Obalende area and beyond.
