The Lesotho Communications Authority (LCA) has officially launched its National Cybersecurity Awareness Campaign, aimed at promoting safe online practices and behavioural change across the country.
The campaign seeks to encourage individuals, families, and small to medium-sized businesses (SMEs) to take daily proactive steps to protect themselves while online and when using connected devices.
Empowering Lesotho Through Digital Security Education
Launching the program, LCA Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Nizam Goolam, expressed pride in introducing the agency’s first-ever cybersecurity awareness campaign for the month of October.
“This initiative marks a significant milestone as we align ourselves with international partners in addressing cybersecurity challenges,” said Goolam. “As the communications regulatory authority, we must safeguard Lesotho’s digital landscape and empower citizens with the knowledge and skills to thrive safely in this digital era.”
He noted that the campaign is a collaborative effort between the LCA, broadcasters, mobile network operators, and various stakeholders. It will utilize television, radio, and social media platforms to educate the public about the importance of cybersecurity.
The LCA urged everyone to adopt good cyber practices in their daily online activities to stay protected from cybercrimes such as phishing, data theft, and malware attacks.
“By working together and raising awareness, we can create a safer digital environment for all,” Goolam concluded.
Weekly Cybersecurity Topics to Guide the Campaign
Acting Chief Technology Officer, Mr. Molupi Molupi, explained that Lesotho recognizes Cybersecurity Awareness Month as an opportunity to educate citizens on digital safety and empower them to safeguard their data.
The campaign will run for four weeks, with each week focusing on a different cybersecurity topic, including:
- The main theme: “Cybersecurity is Everyone’s Responsibility”
- Recognizing phishing attacks
- Using strong passwords
- Practicing good cyber hygiene
Molupi encouraged citizens to use strong and unique passwords, remain alert for phishing attempts, and regularly update software to protect against vulnerabilities.
“Cyber hygiene is essential. Protecting yourself online begins with simple daily actions,” he emphasized.
Cyber Threats Are Real and Growing
Adding to the discussion, LCA Engineer and Cybersecurity Enthusiast, Mr. Tumane Mahloane, highlighted the growing threat of cybercrime globally and its impact on Lesotho.
“In today’s digital world, everything is connected to cyber activity. Cyber-attacks such as malvertising, rogue software, phishing, and malware are increasing in frequency,” he said.
Mahloane revealed that a hacker attack occurs every 39 seconds, and in 2022, global cybercrime damages reached $6 trillion.
He stressed the importance of protecting computer systems, networks, and digital data from theft or unauthorized access to ensure a secure online environment for all users.
October: Cybersecurity Awareness Month
The month of October has been globally recognized as Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a dedicated period during which public and private sectors collaborate to raise awareness about the importance of online safety.
Lesotho’s participation through the LCA’s campaign demonstrates the country’s commitment to building a secure, informed, and resilient digital society capable of defending against evolving cyber threats.
