Mastercard Report Highlights Digital Transformation Gaps and Opportunities for Turkish SMEs

Global payment technology company Mastercard, in partnership with the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) and Akıllı KOBİ, has released the “SME Digital Transformation Report.”

The report, based on insights from hundreds of SMEs in Turkey and a data-driven perspective, identifies key gaps, challenges, and opportunities in digitalization for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Key Findings: Digitalization Vision is a Priority

The report reveals that while many SMEs are aware of the importance of digital transformation, gaps remain in technology investments, digital skills, and adoption of advanced tools.

  • 76% of SMEs are aware of digital strategy.
  • 65% have established digital transformation goals.
  • 49% are both aware and willing to take steps toward digital transformation.
  • 64% monitor digital strategies using performance indicators at the senior management level.
  • 44% allocate a dedicated budget for digital transformation investments.

This shows that digitalization is a priority for two-thirds of SMEs, but investment and skills development still need acceleration.

Digital Leaders Emerging Among SMEs

The report also highlights the rise of digital leaders driving full digitalization:

  • 63% of companies have a manager responsible for digital transformation.
  • 70% believe their management is competent in digital transformation processes.
  • 75% display a positive attitude toward adopting digital technologies.
  • 57% continuously invest in improving employees’ digital skills.
  • 53% receive consulting services for digital transformation.
  • 61% consider digital skills a key recruitment criterion.

This indicates a growing culture of leadership and commitment to long-term digital transformation.

Artificial Intelligence Adoption on the Rise

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a standout factor in SME digitalization:

  • 62% of businesses possess technologies for digital applications.
  • 41% design their technology budgets to adapt to changing priorities.
  • 43% already use AI technologies in their business processes.

AI adoption is helping SMEs optimize operations, improve decision-making, and stay competitive in Turkey’s fast-changing business landscape.
