OpenAI and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have announced a landmark $38 billion, multi-year strategic partnership designed to power the next generation of artificial intelligence (AI) models and applications. The collaboration will see OpenAI leverage AWS’s high-performance cloud infrastructure, featuring hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA GPUs, to run and scale its most demanding AI workloads globally.
Scaling AI Workloads with AWS and NVIDIA GPU Power
Under the agreement, OpenAI will immediately begin using AWS compute infrastructure to train and deploy its frontier models, including those that power ChatGPT and other advanced AI systems. The capacity, which will continue expanding through 2027, includes NVIDIA GB200 and GB300 GPUs, interconnected via Amazon EC2 UltraServers to deliver ultra-low latency and high throughput.
AWS’s proven track record of managing large-scale, secure, and reliable AI clusters, some exceeding 500,000 chips, will provide the backbone for OpenAI’s next phase of innovation. This partnership is also designed to scale agentic workloads, giving OpenAI the flexibility to deploy tens of millions of CPUs to meet rising computational demand.
Accelerating the Future of Generative AI
The deal positions AWS as a critical infrastructure partner for OpenAI’s long-term roadmap, ensuring the company can continue delivering transformative AI experiences to millions of users worldwide. As demand for generative AI models and autonomous agents continues to surge, AWS’s performance, scalability, and security make it an ideal partner for frontier AI research and deployment.
According to AWS, the infrastructure being developed for OpenAI features sophisticated architectural design optimized for maximum AI processing efficiency. By clustering NVIDIA GPUs on a unified network, OpenAI can achieve optimal performance for diverse workloads, from ChatGPT inference serving to training next-generation AI models.
A Milestone in AI and Cloud Collaboration
This partnership underscores a growing industry trend: cloud providers and AI companies joining forces to unlock new levels of intelligence, scalability, and performance. Together, OpenAI and AWS aim to redefine what’s possible in the AI-driven economy, setting new standards for infrastructure efficiency and innovation.
