OpenAI has officially opened applications for the second edition of its six-week accelerator program, Converge 2, which is part of the OpenAI Startup Fund. The program will select 15 AI startups globally and invest $1 million in each, totaling $15 million.
The initiative is open to innovators around the world, including engineers, designers, researchers, and product creators who are using artificial intelligence to reshape various industries. OpenAI said the Startup Fund was created based on the belief that new AI technologies will spark a generation of transformative companies and amplify human creativity and intelligence.
Background and Program Goals
In a statement shared by CEO Sam Altman, OpenAI described the program’s intent and early impact. Converge originally launched in December 2022 to support forward-thinking AI startups at the frontier of applied AI.
Since then, OpenAI noted, interest in AI has surged globally, with innovators leveraging the technology across critical sectors. As models become more capable and development costs decrease, the company believes we’re still at the beginning of AI’s potential.
With Converge 2, participants will benefit from a mix of technical workshops, networking events, mentorship sessions, and discussions with experienced AI professionals. In addition to the $1 million in funding, selected startups will join OpenAI’s growing community of AI builders.
Program Details and Location
The program’s first and final weeks will be held in San Francisco, and OpenAI will cover travel expenses for those sessions. The remaining weeks can be done remotely, though in-person attendance is strongly encouraged.
Eligibility and Application
OpenAI is encouraging founders from diverse backgrounds, disciplines, and experience levels to apply. No prior experience with AI systems is required. The company specifically welcomes applications from underrepresented groups and founders located outside the U.S.
Applications opened on December 13, 2023, and will close on January 26, 2024. Interested startups can submit their entries through the designated application form provided by OpenAI.
