Telecom operator Sonatel has officially commissioned the 2Africa submarine cable, marking a major milestone in what is now regarded as Africa’s largest and most advanced digital connectivity project.
Originally launched in 2020 and brought into operation in December 2025, the 2Africa cable represents a significant leap forward in strengthening internet infrastructure across the continent, positioning Senegal as a key hub in global data traffic.
A New Era of High-Capacity Connectivity
Spanning approximately 45,000 kilometres and linking 33 countries across Africa, Europe, and Asia, the 2Africa submarine cable introduces next-generation technology designed to dramatically improve internet performance.
The system features 16 fibre pairs—far exceeding the 2 to 8 pairs typical of older cables—and delivers a massive capacity of up to 180 terabits per second, nearly ten times greater than previous submarine cable systems.
Notably, 2Africa is the first cable to connect Europe to all African coastal regions, stretching from the United Kingdom down to South Africa, across to the Horn of Africa and Egypt, and extending onward to the Middle East and India.
This infrastructure is expected to support hundreds of millions of users by enhancing both fixed and mobile broadband services,
