Two years after the appointment of a new executive management team by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Galaxy Backbone Limited (GBB) has recorded significant progress in strengthening Nigeria’s digital infrastructure, expanding cloud services, and enhancing cybersecurity across the public sector.
The leadership team, headed by Managing Director/CEO Ibrahim A. Adeyanju, alongside Olusegun Olulade, Muhammed Sani Ibrahim, and Olumbe Akinkugbe, has focused on repositioning the organisation as a central driver of Nigeria’s digital transformation.
From connectivity provider to digital ecosystem leader
Under its Integrated Digital Transformation Strategy (IDTS) 2023–2028, GBB has transitioned from basic connectivity services to building a comprehensive digital ecosystem that integrates infrastructure, platforms, policies, and human capacity development.
Within the period, broadband access was extended to underserved communities through Project 774, while Fibre-to-Hostel initiatives were deployed at key institutions including the University of Lagos, University of Abuja, and University of Jos to support research and digital learning.
Critical national assets such as the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and federal secretariats also recorded improved connectivity, boosting operational efficiency and service delivery.
Strengthening infrastructure and partnerships
A strategic partnership with the West Indian Ocean Cable Company (WIOCC) has enhanced fibre redundancy and positioned the country for scalable broadband expansion across more regions.
The agency also advanced sovereign digital capabilities by optimising its 1Government Cloud platform, expanding its Government as a Platform (GaaP) framework, and introducing GovMail to enable secure communication for over 100,000 federal employees.
Cybersecurity architecture was equally strengthened with round-the-clock monitoring and upgraded control systems, reinforcing trust in government digital platforms.
Overcoming challenges, delivering results
Despite facing fiscal constraints, legacy system limitations, and rising cyber threats, GBB implemented reforms focused on financial discipline, stakeholder engagement, and operational efficiency. These efforts have led to improved service quality and greater institutional stability.
Support from key government officials, including Bosun Tijani, George Akume, and Didi Esther Walson-Jack, ensured alignment between national policy direction and execution.
Recognition and future outlook
Over the past two years, GBB has earned more than 20 industry recognitions, including the NET5.5G Pioneer Award and Best ICT Provider Company of the Year, underscoring its growing influence in Nigeria’s digital landscape.
Prof. Adeyanju was also listed among the top 100 leading figures in the country’s telecommunications sector.
With sustained investments in cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, and digital public services, Galaxy Backbone Limited is positioning itself as a key custodian of Nigeria’s sovereign digital assets—laying a resilient foundation for long-term national development.
