The Vodacom Foundation, in partnership with the Eastern Cape Department of Education, has launched a R1.5 million School of Excellence (SoE) initiative at Lavelilanga Secondary School in Komani, marking a major step toward improving digital education in underserved communities.
The initiative forms part of Vodacom’s broader Educational Ecosystem, introduced in 2019 to expand access to quality education for disadvantaged learners across South Africa.
Driving digital transformation in education
The School of Excellence model is designed to deliver a holistic learning environment by combining digital infrastructure, teacher support, and student welfare services. At Lavelilanga Secondary School, the investment will fund upgraded computer labs, improved security and sanitation facilities, and the deployment of ICT coordinators and psychosocial support professionals.
The model also ensures each participating school is connected to a wider ecosystem that includes Early Childhood Development centres, teacher training hubs, and Vodacom ICT Youth Academies.
Expanding impact across the Eastern Cape
Currently, the SoE programme supports 39 schools, 39 ECD centres, and 10 youth academies nationwide. In the Eastern Cape alone, six schools—including Lavelilanga—have benefited from the initiative, with total investments exceeding R5 million.
Speaking at the launch, Zakhele Jiyane, Managing Executive for the Eastern Cape Region at Vodacom South Africa, said the project reflects the company’s commitment to leveraging technology to transform education and empower young people.
He noted that improving digital access is key to enhancing teaching and learning outcomes, while also creating long-term opportunities for students.
Public-private partnership hailed
Eastern Cape MEC for Education, Fundile Gade, described the collaboration as a critical intervention in addressing systemic challenges within the education sector.
According to him, digital connectivity is essential for unlocking economic opportunities and equipping young people with the skills needed to thrive in a modern economy.
School community welcomes initiative
Principal of Lavelilanga Secondary School, Sisanda Hexana, expressed appreciation for the initiative, highlighting its potential to significantly improve both teaching and learning experiences.
She said the upgraded infrastructure and support systems would better prepare students for success in an increasingly digital world.
