Kenya and Ethiopia have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening regional integration and digital connectivity under the Horn of Africa Gateway Development Project, following high-level bilateral talks in Addis Ababa.

The engagements brought together senior government officials and regional stakeholders to accelerate the development of a seamless cross-border corridor combining transport, trade, and digital infrastructure.

The Kenyan delegation was led by John Kipchumba Tanui, Principal Secretary for ICT and Digital Economy, while the Ethiopian team was headed by Dhenge Boru.

Discussions focused on integrating physical and digital systems to enhance trade efficiency and expand access to connectivity across the Horn of Africa. Key agencies involved spanned transport, energy, ICT, customs, and revenue services, reflecting a coordinated, multi-sector approach.

Kenya highlighted ongoing investments in fibre optic and transport networks linking regional markets, including Uganda, Tanzania, Somalia, South Sudan, and Djibouti.

Under the HoAGDP framework, both countries reported progress on key initiatives, including agreements for bridge crossings at Malka Suftu and Malka Ladeni, the establishment of One-Stop Border Posts, and enhanced customs cooperation. Plans are also underway to deploy nearly 1,000 kilometres of fibre optic infrastructure across the corridor.

The project is expected to position Kenya as a strategic digital gateway, linking the region to global markets through the Red Sea and beyond, while boosting trade, connectivity, and economic growth.

Officials from both countries stressed the need for sustained collaboration and faster implementation of agreed projects to ensure tangible socio-economic benefits.

The Horn of Africa Gateway Development Project is widely seen as a critical driver in building a more connected, competitive, and digitally integrated regional economy.
