Kenya and France have announced a new partnership to develop a Science and Engineering Complex at the University of Nairobi as part of efforts to strengthen innovation, research, and technology-driven education in East Africa.
The announcement was made during engagements involving Kenyan President William Ruto and French President Emmanuel Macron at the ongoing Africa Forward Summit.
Speaking during the event, Ruto reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to investing in youth-focused innovation and preparing young people for the demands of a rapidly evolving global digital economy.
According to the Kenyan leader, the government is implementing reforms aimed at transforming students from passive consumers of technology into creators, innovators, and problem-solvers capable of driving economic growth.
A major highlight of the discussions was the planned development of the University of Nairobi Science and Engineering Complex, which is expected to become a leading centre for scientific research, engineering development, and technological innovation in Kenya and across the region.
Ruto said the facility will support research-driven solutions to social and economic challenges while strengthening opportunities for young innovators and entrepreneurs.
He stressed that expanding access to science, technology, and engineering education remains central to Kenya’s long-term development strategy.
“Empowering young people through education, innovation, and technology is critical to securing the country’s future,” Ruto stated.
The president added that Kenya’s youthful population represents one of the country’s greatest assets, noting that the government is focused on creating an enabling environment that supports entrepreneurship, digital creativity, and innovation-led growth.
The partnership also reflects growing cooperation between Kenya and France in education, technology, and infrastructure development, amid increasing efforts by African governments to position innovation and research at the centre of economic transformation strategies.
