Kenya Unveils AI for Disability Initiative at Connected Africa Summit 2026

The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy in collaboration with Huawei and other ecosystem players, aims to leverage artificial intelligence to improve accessibility, skills development, and participation in the digital economy.

Key partners in the project include the State Department for Broadcasting and Telecommunications, the Kenya Institute of Special Education, Assistive Technologies for Disability Trust (AT4D), and inABLE, among others. The multi-stakeholder collaboration is designed to ensure coordinated development and deployment of AI solutions tailored to the needs of persons with disabilities.

Launched in Nairobi, the project attracted participation from stakeholders across more than 12 African countries, underscoring a growing continental push to make artificial intelligence more inclusive and impactful.

Aligned with Huawei’s TECH4ALL initiative, the programme reinforces a shared commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind as Africa accelerates its digital transformation agenda. Organisers say the initiative places inclusive innovation at the centre of emerging digital ecosystems.

As part of the event, students who participated in the AI for Disability Hackathon 2024 were also recognised for their innovative solutions aimed at improving accessibility and quality of life. Many of these ideas are expected to evolve into practical tools that address real-world challenges faced by persons with disabilities.

Huawei and its partners reaffirmed their commitment to supporting young innovators, providing the resources and mentorship needed to refine and scale their ideas into sustainable, high-impact solutions across Africa.
