M-KOPA Kenya’s latest Impact Report shows over $1.6 billion in credit unlocked, 4.8 million customers reached, millions gaining first-time smartphone access, and major contributions to Kenya’s economy, jobs, and digital inclusion.

M-KOPA Kenya has revealed significant progress in its newly released 2025 Kenya Impact Report, announcing that it has unlocked more than $1.6 billion (KES 207 billion) in credit and supported 4.8 million customers previously excluded from formal financial systems. The report underscores the company’s consistent commitment to advancing digital and financial inclusion across its markets since 2010.

Expanding Digital Access and Enabling First-Time Smartphone Users

The report shows that M-KOPA has helped 4.5 million Kenyans gain access to smartphones, including 2.1 million people using a smartphone for the first time. This has been central to the fintech’s mission of empowering everyday earners through accessible technology and flexible financing options.

M-KOPA Kenya’s General Manager, Martin Kingori, emphasized Kenya’s vital role in the company’s growth and customer impact.

“Our 2025 Impact Report demonstrates how inclusive financing, responsible lending, and digital innovation are transforming lives at scale. The real achievements come from everyday earners, 9 in 10 now enjoy a better quality of life, and more than half report higher income,” Kingori noted.

Key insights from the report include:

  • 67% of users rely on their M-KOPA smartphone to earn an income
  • 64% say the device helps them meet household needs more easily
  • 52% have experienced increased earnings after joining the platform

Beyond Connectivity: Credit, Insurance, and Digital Services

M-KOPA’s “More than a Phone” product continues to transform lives by combining smartphone ownership with access to credit, insurance, digital services, and flexible daily repayments.

Many customers are accessing key financial and digital services for the first time:

  • 47% are new smartphone users
  • 37% received their first formal loan
  • 68% got their first health insurance coverage

These results highlight how M-KOPA is expanding financial access and supporting upward mobility for underserved communities.

Driving Economic Growth Through Local Jobs, Taxes, and Procurement

M-KOPA’s contributions extend well beyond consumer financing. In 2024, the company:

  • Paid $29.2 million (KES 3.79 billion) in taxes
  • Directed $156.7 million (KES 20.3 billion) into local procurement
  • Employed 1,320 staff
  • Supported 14,000 sales agents across Kenya

Many of the company’s employees are young professionals, with M-KOPA providing their first formal job, a major boost to youth employment.

Powering Local Manufacturing Through Kenya’s Largest Assembly Plant

M-KOPA’s Nairobi assembly facility, recognized as Africa’s biggest smartphone assembly plant, has now produced over 2 million smartphones, strengthening Kenya’s growing technology and manufacturing ecosystem.
