Mauritius is moving toward the introduction of an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system designed to modernise its border-control process and create a smoother travel experience. The initiative is part of a national push to strengthen the country’s tourism appeal and maintain its competitive edge globally.
During the 50th anniversary ceremony of Constance Hotels & Resorts, Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam highlighted the ETA as a central component of Mauritius’ development strategy. Once operational, the system will transform the way travellers enter and exit the country.
A Digital Pre-Arrival Clearance for Travellers
The ETA will serve as an online pre-travel approval, completed before passengers board their flights to Mauritius. This approach is similar to systems currently used in the USA, Canada, and several European countries.
The introduction of the ETA aims to:
- Cut down on long queues at ports of entry
- Simplify formalities for tourists and citizens
- Enhance national security through digital verification
- Improve the overall travel experience
Tourism Growth Driving the Initiative
Tourism plays a critical role in Mauritius’ economy, and the government is working to keep the sector competitive. Data from Tourism Analysis shows that Mauritius welcomed 1.14 million tourists between January and October 2025, reflecting a 3.7% annual increase from the 1.1 million recorded in the same period in 2024.
Additional highlights include:
- 96% of visitors arrived by air
- Almost 17,000 tourists entered by sea
The Prime Minister stressed that continued investment in infrastructure, digitalisation, and updated regulations is necessary to support the sector’s expansion.
Mauritius’ Continued Attraction as a Tourist Hotspot
The island nation is celebrated for its beautiful beaches, natural landscapes, and luxury hospitality sector. Popular attractions include:
- Le Morne Beach
- Seven Coloured Earth
- Black River Gorges National Park
- Traditional markets, cultural sites, and local festivals
The ETA aligns with Mauritius’ effort to build a more sustainable and technologically advanced tourism environment.
Potential Features of the Proposed ETA
While full details are yet to be confirmed, early indications suggest that the ETA could:
- Apply to all incoming passengers, including those who currently do not require visas
- Include a digital identity verification component
- Replace or improve existing travel documentation procedures
For now, the system remains in development.
Current Travel Requirements Remain in Place
Until the ETA is implemented, travellers must continue using Mauritius’ existing entry system:
- Many nationalities may enter visa-free for short stays
- Others still need a visa before travel or visa on arrival
- All passengers must complete the Mauritius All-in-One Digital Travel Form before departure
This online form generates a QR-coded PDF, which must be shown upon arrival. Travellers who skip the form must complete a paper landing card, extending their processing time at the airport.
ETA Expected to Make Travel Easier
Once launched, the ETA is expected to remove manual steps, reduce airport congestion, and offer a more efficient digital border process. The upgrade forms part of Mauritius’ long-term plan to improve travel infrastructure and deliver a seamless, modern experience for millions of visitors annually.
