Nigeria’s Federal Government plans to install 30 kilometres of fibre-optic infrastructure at Obafemi Awolowo University to enhance campus-wide internet access, research output, and digital learning.

The Federal Government has revealed plans to roll out up to 30 kilometres of fibre-optic cable across the campus of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) as part of efforts to significantly improve internet connectivity for students and staff.

The project is designed to tackle long-standing network challenges on campus while accelerating the university’s digital transformation.

Part of Nigeria’s Broader Digital Economy Push

The disclosure was made by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, during an official visit to the institution.

Tijani explained that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s strategy to strengthen Nigeria’s digital future through targeted infrastructure development, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He noted that universities play a critical role in national innovation and that improved digital infrastructure is essential to economic growth.

Campus Buildings and Hostels to Benefit From Fibre Rollout

According to the minister, the fibre-optic deployment will cover academic facilities, student hostels, and staff residential areas, delivering faster and more reliable broadband across the university.

The project is being funded through the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF), which supports connectivity in underserved institutions and communities.

Government to Support Digital Research and Talent Development

In addition to infrastructure upgrades, the Federal Government announced new investments in research and capacity building at OAU.

Through the National Digital Economy Research Scheme, the government will sponsor:

  • One professorial research grant
  • Three postdoctoral research positions
  • Three PhD scholarships

The initiative aims to strengthen human capital in key areas of Nigeria’s digital economy.

Minister Highlights OAU’s National Contributions

Tijani praised OAU’s history of academic excellence, noting its impact on Nigeria’s development across sectors such as technology, infrastructure, and enterprise.

He said the university’s achievements demonstrate how academic institutions can drive national progress when supported with the right infrastructure and policy backing.

University Says Upgrade Will Improve Internet Services

OAU’s Public Relations Office confirmed that the fibre-optic project will enhance internet services across academic platforms, staff quarters, and student residences.

The announcement comes amid increasing complaints from students over unstable network access, particularly during virtual lectures, examinations, and online academic activities.

Students Share Frustration Over Poor Network Quality

Students have consistently described internet access on campus as unreliable. Feedback gathered by the Association of Campus Journalists OAU (ACJOAU) highlights frequent disruptions.

One student using MTN said she often walks around campus searching for a signal during online classes. Another student on Globacom noted that while the network can be stable at times, outages force her to rely on friends’ hotspots to stay informed academically.

Fibre Infrastructure Expected to Boost Productivity

The planned 30km fibre-optic installation is expected to significantly reduce these challenges by delivering faster, more consistent internet access across OAU.

Improved connectivity will support digital learning, research collaboration, online assessments, and access to academic resources, enhancing productivity and the overall campus experience for both students and staff.
